| Early Detection of ADD & ADHD
An ADD/ADHD child will show a pattern of these characteristics
at levels that are not related to age or situation.
The actual diagnosis of ADD/ADHD is usually not determined quickly
in a child’s younger years. Since its conditions may go undetected
over a long period of time, children who suffer from it are often
labeled, by their teachers, inattentive, bored, lazy, and to have
behavior problems. It is not unusual for ADD/ADHD children with
high intellectual abilities to go undiagnosed until middle or even
junior high school.
Causes
Studies show that parents likely have little control over the cause
of ADD/ADHD. The following are accepted as the most likely causes:
-
Heredity/Genetics: Another member of the family had a similar
temperament or pattern of behavior.
-
Biological/Physiological: Possible chemical imbalance that
inhibits the efficiency of the neurotransmitters of certain
portions of the brain.
-
Lead Poisoning: Ingesting toxic levels of lead, by mouth or
absorption.
-
Allergies/Medical Conditions: Asthma, food allergies, and ear
infections.
-
Pregnancy/Birth Complications: Premature birth, lack of oxygen,
or history of prenatal exposure to drugs and alcohol.
-
Brain Injury: This cause is present in a very small number
of ADD/ADHD children.
The Future
As research continues, some specialists are encouraging
people to think of ADD/ADHD not as a disorder, but simply as a different
style of learning which, when supported, can enhance the student's
natural abilities.
